For scorching rookie, it’s no laughing matter

Aaron Judge couldn’t have scripted a better start to his first full season in the major leagues. The rookie outfielder didn’t consider such a beginning a possibility in spring training. It wasn’t even a dream — it was that crazy to consider.

“I would have laughed at them,” Judge said, when asked if he could have envisioned a first month quite like this. “I would have said, ‘You guys are joking with me.’ ”

Of course, nobody could have predicted this from the sculpted 6foot-7 Judge, who was named AL rookie of the month rookie on Wednesday, before he belted his major league-leading 13th homer and added two more singles in a come-from-behind 8-6 win over the Blue Jays at the Stadium.

“Judge has been out of this world,” Yankees third baseman Chase Headley said. “He’s been dominant.”

Now batting .330, Judge has led the surprising Yankees to a 17-9 start and his 13 home runs are the most by a rookie in the sport’s history through the first 25 games of a season. The last time he got this hot at the plate? “Maybe T-ball,” he joked.

While the two-run shot to center field in the third inning was impressive, Judge seemed more pleased with his seventh-inning single off reliever Joe Biagini, coming on a 1-2 changeup, starting the Yankees’ three-run rally.

“His value, it’s hard to measure what he’s done for us [so far],” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “I’m not sure any of us expected this start.”

Judge has been so impressive, Girardi this week compared him to Yankee legend Derek Jeter, who said he is a fan of Judge’s as well.

“It’s incredible, especially [coming] from a guy that I’ve looked up to for years growing up,” Judge said before producing the first three-hit game of his career. “To hear him say that, it’s special. It’s humbling. It’s pretty cool.”

The former first-round pick out of Fresno State struggled after getting called up last year, hitting just .173 with 42 strikeouts in 84 at-bats, but he learned from that experience. Judge has swung at more strikes this year, striking out just 27 times in 88 at-bats this season, while drawing 15 walks. It’s eerily similar to what catcher Gary Sanchez did last year, when he hit 20 home runs and drove in 42 runs in 201 at-bats to close the season and finish second in AL rookie of the year voting.

“Just quality at-bats. I’m trying to swing at the right pitches. That’s what I was seeing from Gary last year,” Judge said.
