Come to Papa, Mr. Prez

- Gabby Morrongiello

President Trump will meet with Pope Francis at the Vatican this month during his first foreign trip in office, which will also take him to Saudi Arabia and Israel, administration officials said Thursday.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Francis during a visit to Vatican City on May 24.

While he publicly sparred with Francis during the election cycle, Trump has since said it would be “an honor” to meet with the pontiff.

The trip will include Trump’s participation in the annual NATO summit in Brussels on May 25 and a G-7 summit in southern Italy on May 26.

Trump will first travel to Saudi Arabia, where he will meet with leaders from the Muslim world.

Officials said the Saudi government had reached out to Team Trump shortly after his election to organize a visit.

“They approached us and wanted to start a new relationship with America,” a White House official told reporters.

“One of the biggest problems that we face in the world today is radical extremism, and one thing about the president is that he doesn’t think about the short term, he thinks, ‘How can we come up with a longterm solution?’ So we thought that was an important place to start.”

Trump has already held bilateral meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Deputy Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammad bin Salman Al Saud.

He was said to be planning to deliver a major speech while in Israel and was weighing a visit to Bethlehem, whose jurisdiction has been a source of tension between Israelis and Palestinians.
