This is a graphic novel, the author’s story of her childhood and teenage years during the Islamic revolution in Iran. I was aware of this happening when I was young . . .I’m reading it now with my daughter. I’m looking for ways to expand her ideas of how the world is and hopefully open her eyes as to what’s going on outside her own privileged, New York world.

The Principles of Uncertainty by Maira Kalman

This is another book I’ve shared with Miranda. The title reflects what it’s like to be a woman, a mother and an artist. Maira Kalman illustrates with words and pictures strong memories of the women in her life, particularly her mother.

Lady Parts by Andrea Martin

We were working together on “Pippin” when this came out and Andrea gave me an inscribed copy. I finally read it six months ago, and it was like rediscovering an old friend! Andrea shows how we can be good mothers even though we’re not perfect and we don’t really know what we’re doing. It’s inspiring.

Webster’sW New International Dictionary: Second Edition unabridged

My mother was a “look it up!” mom and always had this dictionary in our house. Now that we’re all digital, I felt something was missing, so I went to eBay and found this. Now whenever my daughter asks, “What does this mean?” it’s really satisfying to have this she can look it up in!
