McCain: It’s new W’gate
Members of Congress from both parties expressed outrage Tuesday over the latest controversies to rock the White House — with Republican Sen. John McCain calling it a “Watergate-level” scandal and the chairmen of the House Oversight Committee getting his “subpoena pen” ready.
“If the [James Comey] memo [about President Trump] exists, I need to see it and I need to see it right away,” Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), who led numerous investigations into the Obama administration, told NBC News.
“We are drafting the necessary paperwork to get the memo, so we will find out in a hurry if it’s there.”
Chaffetz later released a letter calling for all communications between Trump and former FBI Director Comey to be handed over to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) said that if the president did ask Comey to drop a federal investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, Trump should be subject to impeachment proceedings.
“Reluctantly . . . I have to say yes,” King said on CNN when asked whether the Senate was close to an impeachment process.
“Simply because obstruction of justice is such a serious offense,” King added.
McCain (R-Ariz.) said the latest allegations surrounding the Trump White House brought the situation to “Watergate size and scale.”
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, urged Comey to testify publicly.
“Enough is enough,” Schiff said. “Congress really needs to get to the bottom of this.”
