Don, Turk prez at odds

- Mark Moore

President Trump and Turkish leader Tayyip Erdogan vowed Tuesday to battle terrorism, but Erdogan slammed the US plan to arm Syrian Kurds, whom Turkey regards as terrorists, for the fight against the Islamic State.

“We support Turkey in the fight against terror groups like ISIS,” Trump said at a joint appearance with Erdogan at the White House. “We also appreciate Turkey’s leadership in seeking an end to the horrific killing in Syria.”

Trump also announced the United States would reestablish its military and economic partnership with Turkey.

Erdogan praised his nation’s relationship with the United States and pledged to continue the fight against all terrorist groups.

But he seemed to draw the line at the Pentagon’s decision to arm a Syrian Kurdish militia known as the YPG, or Kurdish People’s Protection Units, to fight ISIS.

“Taking YPG . . . into con- sideration in the region, it will never be accepted, and it is going to be against a global agreement that we have reached,” the Turkish leader said.

Last month, the Turkish military bombed Kurdish forces in Syria and Iraq.
