Ramirez added to bolster ’pen

- By MIKE PUMA

PHOENIX — Neil Ramirez has a live arm and was available, so the desperate Mets were willing to take a chance on him.

After two straight days of bullpen implosions, the Mets signed the righthander off the scrap heap Tuesday, hoping he can provide relief depth.

The 27-year-old Ramirez was designated for assignment by the Giants earlier this season and met the same fate with the Blue Jays this month after just four days with the team.

In nine appearances for the Giants, he posted an 8.71 ERA, but struck out 18 batters in 10 ¹/3 innings.

“I just think every mistake I did make was getting hit,” Ramirez said before the Mets lost, 5-4, to the Diamondbacks Tuesday. “When I was making pitches I needed to make I was getting guys out and the ones that were coming across the plate and kind of in that bad middle area were getting hit. You just have to limit those and keep the ball down like I know I can.”

The move came a day after Hansel Robles and Josh Edgin combined to allow three home runs in the eighth inning of the Mets’ 7-3 loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday. A day earlier, the Mets bullpen allowed eight runs over three innings in a loss to the Brewers.

Curtis Granderson was dropped to eighth in the batting order for the first time this season, but manager Terry Collins said he isn’t ready to bench the slumping outfielder, who entered play batting only .148.

“You just think in your heart that he’s going to break out, so you want him in there,” Collins said.

To clear space on the 40-man roster for Ramirez, the Mets moved Jeurys Familia to the 60-day disabled list. Familia will be sidelined three to four months after undergoing surgery for a blood clot.
