Crowley aide’s kid got 10G campaign salary

- By MICHAEL GARTLAND

Rep. Joe Crowley paid out more than $10,000 to his campaign treasurer’s son — starting when the kid was only 14 years old, The Post has learned.

Jacob Kaufman, 18, started handling “birthday card mailings” for Crowley’s campaign in February 2013, several months before his 15th birthday, and continued to receive payments through March of this year, records show.

Jacob is the son of Scott Kaufman, Crowley’s longtime campaign treasurer.

The Post reported last week that Crowley is renting campaign space in the same two-story building as Scott Kaufman’s law firm, even though it’s outside Crowley’s congressional district.

The building is owned by Crowley’s brother, Sean, who has collected about $70,000 in rent since 2007.

A good-government watchdog questioned Joe Crowley’s spending habits.

“When it’s part of a larger practice with other related ventures, it becomes a concern because it’s all part of the same extended group of family and friends,” said Dick Dadey, executive director of Citizens Union.

“It’s tough to bring independent judgment to a conflict or an issue when a personal relationship exists.”

Scott Kaufman, a former Queens assistant DA, has raked in about $600,000 from the Crowley campaign since 2003, campaign records show.

Jacob Kaufman first landed on the Crowley campaign listing in 2013, when he was paid $150 monthly for handling “birthday card mailings.”

By September, 2015, a month after his 17th birthday, the campaign re-classified payments to Jacob under the heading “payroll.”

The first “payroll” payment was for $1,267. Subsequent payments ranged from $305 to $916 a pop.

The most recent check Kaufman received from the campaign, for $305.65, is dated March 10 of this year, records show.

Jacob Kaufman’s Facebook page shows he began attending upstate Binghamton University on Aug. 21, 2016, and since then has received several monthly payments totaling $2,135 from the Crowley campaign.

The school is 195 miles from Queens.

Crowley spokeswoman Courtney Gidner said the younger Kaufman was hired because he’s a good worker who excelled at his assignments.
