GM won’t pull trigger on hard-hitting prospects

- By DAN MARTIN

Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith continue to tear up Triple-A pitching at Las Vegas — and that’s where they’re going to stay for now.

“I’m very happy with the progress they’re making,” general manager Sandy Alderson said before the Mets opened a homestand with a 3-0 win over the Angels on Friday night at Citi Field. “Both of them have had excellent offensive seasons and are play- ing well defensively, also. So we’re very happy with where they are.”

Rosario has impressed at shortstop, and heading into Friday night, he led Las Vegas with an OPS of .953 through 40 games. Smith, a first baseman, had an OPS of .869 through 41 games.

Alderson said he is concentrating on other aspects of the roster with the team dragging a seven-game los- ing streak into Friday.

“There are no current plans to promote either one of them,” Alderson said before jokingly adding a caveat. “Unless one of them can pitch, in which case we might reconsider. Again, our issue is not much on the player side of the ball as it is on the pitching side. That’s where we have to focus and stabilize.”

But Alderson wouldn’t rule out moving either player to Queens at some point this season.

“That’s not to say one or the other of those players wouldn’t be helpful in some way, but we don’t see that as a panacea and we don’t see it as the right time in the overall sense of where are, who we have and what we’re trying to do,” Alderson said.

On the pitching front, both Steven Matz (elbow) and Seth Lugo (elbow) made it through their rehab game Thursday with Single-A St. Lucie in one piece.

“They’re both scheduled to pitch again shortly,” Alderson said.

Matz could pitch with Las Vegas in New Orleans next week, and the GM said both pitchers were “on track,” though he declined to predict when they might return to the major league roster.

With Friday night’s game, Terry Collins tied Davey Johnson for the franchise record by managing his 1,012th game with the Mets.
