Conforto playing it safe with hand

- By MIKE PUMA

MIAMI — After consulting with Mets teammates who have incurred similar hand injuries, Michael Conforto decided the best option was to proceed slowly in returning to action.

The Mets outfielder remained sidelined Wednesday with a bruised left hand — he was hit by a pitch three days earlier — and unavailable to hit against the Marlins. He was hardly missed in the Mets’ 8-0 win.

Loud and clear, Conforto received a message from the team’s training staff and players such as Travis d’Arnaud and Brandon Nimmo, who have dealt with similar issues, that rushing to return could affect his swing.

“I don’t want to have anything mess with my swing and then get away from what’s working,” Conforto said. “It’s frustrating. When you get the good news it’s not broken, I just want to get back in there.”

Matt Reynolds was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to give the Mets an additional bench option.

Robert Gsellman was officially added to the docket of casualties Wednesday, placed on the 10-day DL with a strained left hamstring, an injury he sustained running to first the previous night.

Gsellman joined Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler among the team’s starting pitchers on the DL. In addition, Steven Matz and Seth Lugo were on the DL for the first twoplus months of the season.

Wheeler is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday and would start this weekend at Citi Field against the Phillies if there is no discomfort in his right arm..The right-hander was placed on the DL last week with right biceps tendinitis.

Rafael Montero will take Gsellman’s spot in the rotation.
