Castro back on DL with hammy

- By GEORGE A. KING III

SEATTLE — Starlin Castro will go on the disabled list Sunday for the second time in less than a month with a right hamstring problem.

According to manager Joe Girardi, Castro reinjured the hamstring Wednesday in Minneapolis beating out an infield single to third. He remained in that game and played nine innings both Thursday and Friday.

“It’s frustrating and he is frustrated,’’ Girardi said of the second baseman, whose 97 hits in 73 games were second on the team to Aaron Judge’s 105 in 94 tilts following Saturday’s 6-5 loss in 10 innings to the Mariners. Girardi said Castro, who is hitting .307, balked at going on the shelf but the move couldn’t be avoided when the area became discolored.

“Wednesday, he iced it after the game,” Girardi said. “Thursday he said he was a little tight. Friday the blood showed up, and that’s when we knew we had an issue.’’

Tyler Wade will take Castro’s place on the 25man roster, and Girardi said he will platoon the left-handed hitting Wade with Ronald Torreyes at second.

Torreyes was 1-for-3 with two RBIs on Saturday.

Wade filled in for Castro the last time he was on the DL. In nine games he hit .107 (3-for-28), but Girardi said Wade put together better at-bats toward the end.

Moving from third to first base Thursday has forced Chase Headley to learn a new position on the fly, but it hasn’t cut into the hot streak the switch-hitter is on at the plate.

Headley went 2-for-4 Friday and was batting .320 (40-for125) in the previous 36 games before going 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter Saturday.

An 0-for-4 effort on July 14 extended Didi Gregorius’ slump to 4-for-33 (.121), but since then Gregorius has gone 14-for-33 (.424) in nine games.
