Snacks ready to swallow up quarterbacks this season

Snacks is looking for sacks in 2017.

Damon Harrison already is one of the NFL’s best defensive tackles against the run. On Thursday, as the Giants reported for training camp, he said he is looking to expand his portfolio by getting more results on the occasions when opponents pass when they are expected to run.

“I didn’t have many sacks last year. I’ve been working my butt off this offseason to change that,” said Harrison, who had a career-high 2.5 sacks last season. “If you ask me for one thing I am taking from last year, it’s that I didn’t have any sacks.”

It’s not that Harrison doesn’t understand his role — “Stop the run, man, on early downs … provide a little push on the pocket if they need me on third downs,” he said — but he sees others ways he can be an effective weapon.

Strength and speed are typically the hallmarks of pass rushers who pile up sacks. Harrison sees both as important, but believes the key areas he needs to improve involve technique and game preparation.

In addition to working on his speed and agility, he called “not being scared” an aim.

“I don’t want to say I play scared, but I try to dominate the run game so much that I end up with two hands on people a lot,” Harrison said. “In passing situations, that’s the one thing you don’t want to do: have both your hands on someone because you’re down the middle. You want to rush half a man.”

CB Eli Apple arrived at his second NFL training camp with more muscle and less hair. He sported a close-cropped head, with no sign of the tight curls he had as a rookie.

“I kind of came in with a little new look, some of the guys just looked at me and they didn’t really recognize me at first, so I’d introduce myself all over again,’’ Apple said.

DE Owa Odighizuwa, who stayed away from the team this offseason attending to personal issues, reported with his teammates. … RB Shaun Draughn (ankle) will start camp on the physically unable to perform list.
