Team not set to hand out Revis’ number

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

When Morris Claiborne signed with the Jets this offseason, the cornerback requested the jersey number he had worn his entire career in Dallas — No. 24.

But the Jets were not ready to hand him the jersey Darrelle Revis wore for his entire Jets career — a sign the team may be thinking of retiring it.

“I definitely asked for 24 because that’s the only number I know,” Claiborne said. “I’ve had 24 since I’ve come into the NFL. But I understand the history behind that number. Like a lot of people said, ‘ do you want that number? You have some pretty big shoes to fill.’ Yeah, you’re right, but I’m not coming to fill Revis’ shoes. Revis’ shoes are already filled. They are filled and then some. Revis is that guy. I still think Revis is one of the better cornerbacks in this league. I’m here to fill my own shoes.”

Revis departed the Jets unceremoniously, getting cut by the team in March after a dismal 2016 season. Still, Revis is one of the greatest players in team history.

Claiborne took No. 21 after the Jets cut Marcus Gilchrist in May.

“I’m not here to fuss and fight over a number,” Claiborne said. “Whatever I get, I’m going to go play in it.”

David Harris gave his most extensive comments about the Jets releasing him June 6 during a SiriusXM interview on Monday.

“They kind of blindsided me with the whole thing, being so late in the offseason, a week before minicamp,” Harris said, according to ESPN.com. “It came out of left field. It was more about the disrespect of the whole situation than anything else.”

After the Jets cut him, Harris signed with the rival Patriots.

“But the Jets made their decision,” Harris said. “I had to sit back and be patient and evaluate some things. A couple teams were inquiring about me, but then once the Patriots came into the picture, it was pretty much a done deal as soon as I found out they were interested in me.”

RB Matt Forte tweaked his hamstring and did not participate in team drills. WR Robby Anderson also tweaked something, although Bowles said he was not sure what body part it was. ... Former Jets safety Marcus Gilchrist signed with the Texans.
