A look at how Yankees-Tigers turned into all-out chaos:

-

JULY 31 AT YANKEE STADIUM

Top 6th inning: Tigers outfielder Mikie Mahtook (right) takes a 98-mph fastball from Tommy Kahnle off the top of his helmet, though even Mahtook says, “He wasn’t trying to hit me in the head.” However, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus is less forgiving, saying “you’ve got to be able to command your fastball. You can’t be up around guys’ heads.” Kahnle later apologizes to Mahtook, who actually had been hit earlier in the game as well, that time by Luis Severino.

Bottom 7th inning: Tigers starter Michael Fulmer hits Jacoby Ellsbury in the backside. There are warnings to both sides, but no ejections.

THURSDAY AT COMERICA PARK

Top 4th inning: Gary Sanchez homers to left-center field off Fulmer. Top 5th inning: Fulmer hits Sanchez with a pitch on his front side. Sanchez frowns and looks at Fulmer. Bottom 6th inning: Kahnle throws behind Miguel Cabrera and gets immediately ejected. Joe Girardi (right) comes out to argue the ejection and gets ejected himself. After Kahnle’s replacement, Aroldis Chapman, warms up, Cabrera and Austin Romine exchange words at home plate. Romine stands up and removes his mask, and Cabrera shoves Romine and throws a punch at him. The two wrestle each other to the ground, and the benches clear. Sanchez sucker-punches Cabera while he’s on the ground. Romine and Cabrera are ejected.

Bottom 7th inning: Dellin Betances hits James McCann (above) with a 98-mph fastball in the helmet. The benches clear. Betances and Rob Thomson (bench coach and acting manager in the wake of Girardi’s ejection) are ejected.

Top 8th inning: Tigers reliever Alex Wilson hits Todd

Frazier (middle, right) in the front upper thigh. Wilson and Ausmus are ejected. The benches clear. Brett Gardner gets into a scrum.
