TOP TIPS FOR GOOD DELIVERY

-

1. Take up more room

“When we are feeling self-conscious, we want to shrink away into the room so that nobody notices us,” says German. “We may hunch over, hide in a corner, and cross our arms and legs until we almost disappear.”

Plant your feet when standing, even with hand on hips, which instantly makes you feel more confident. “Don’t look down. This is a wedding, and it shows the guests you are present in moment.”

2. Stand up straight

“Having good posture is relaxing because it feels good and it helps you fill your lungs with air so that you are able to speak easier,” says German, who suggests pretending there’s an apple between your chin and your chest to deliver the words smoothly.

3. Make eye contact

Scan the room, focusing on people a few seconds at a time. If that’s too much, focus on someone in the back row. “Not only does this make you seem more confident, but you begin to realize that they are just people like you and there is nothing to be afraid of,” says German.

4. Breathe deeply

Take 10 deep breaths before your speech, holding each for three seconds. It will set the pace for the rest of the speech. “Deep breathing will help you slow down as you speak so that you present yourself as cool, calm and under control,” German says.

5. Keep an open posture

“Always avoid crossing your arms when speaking in public. The audience won’t receive you as well when you are closed off, and you will feel those vibes instantly,” German says.

Men should not squeeze their hands or use their belt loop or pockets. “That’s great at work because it’s a power struggle, but not here. And hands behind the back is unattractive as it makes you lean forward.”

6. Practice makes perfect

Start practicing in front of a mirror, or try videoing yourself before the big day.
