Says immig kin shouldn’t get US preference

- By BOB FREDERICKS

President Trump staked out another hard-line position on immigration Friday following backlash over his comments that Dreamers should be allowed to stay in the US — tweeting that relatives of legal immigrants should not have an easy path into the country.

“CHAIN MIGRATION cannot be allowed to be part of any legislation on Immigration!” Trump wrote, using a term for the process by which the extended family of legal immigrants enjoy a simpler path into the US.

The president last month embraced legislation backed by two Republican senators that would eliminate the preference for US residents’ extended and adult family members while maintaining priority for their spouses and minor children.

The tweet comes as the president and congressional Democratic leaders are working on a deal to preserve protections for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants living illegally in America under the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Many conservative GOP lawmakers and pundits raged at the idea of a deal on DACA between Trump — whose harsh rhetoric about illegal immigration on the campaign trail last year energized his base — and Charles Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, the minority leaders of the Senate and House.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform warned that legalizing the Dreamers would lead to massive chain migration.

“After chain migration it would be the biggest amnesty in modern history,” FAIR tweeted.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reaffirmed Trump’s support of Dreamers, but also reiterated his demand for increased border security and the proposed border wall with Mexico

“He supports making an agreement on DACA, but that would have to include massive border security and interior enforcements. He still is 100 percent committed to the wall,” she said during a press briefing, adding that a more detailed plan would be released in seven to 10 days.

Meanwhile, a new report on Friday could explain why Trump was so willing to deal with Schumer and Pelosi: He thinks the Republican leaders are bores.

Trump has griped to staff that he has struggled in forging a relationship with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — whom he has repeatedly slammed on Twitter — and House Speaker Paul Ryan, whom Trump has called a “Boy Scout,” Politico reported.

Trump prefers kibitzing with his fellow outer-borough buddy Schumer and Pelosi, sources told Politico.
