Gsellman stands tall despite Amed errors

- By MIKE PUMA

ATLANTA — Robert Gsellman needed a test Sunday.

After facing barely a hint of adversity into the seventh inning against the Braves, the Mets righthander watched rookie shortstop Amed Rosario commit errors behind him on consecutive grounders. Would this be the moment Gsellman folded, as he had so many times this season?

There was no such luck for the Braves, as Gsellman resumed his dominance and carried the Mets to a 5-1 victory at SunTrust Park.

“I tried to pick up Rosario, he had a couple of errors, we all make mistakes,” Gsellman said. “You have got to pick up your teammates sometimes.”

Gsellman (7-7) surrendered only an unearned run on three hits in his best performance of the season, allowing the Mets to win their first road se- ries in more than a month.

The Mets scored twice against Julio Teheran in the first inning, with Jose Reyes’ RBI triple serving as the big hit. Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the ninth to give the Mets a cushion after Phillip Evans delivered an RBI double.

In the seventh, Gsellman recorded an out before Rosario booted Johan Camargo’s grounder. The ensuing batter, Dansby Swanson, hit a grounder under Rosario’s glove for a second straight error. But Gsellman rebounded to get the next two outs, with a run scoring in the process.

“[Gsellman] is a competitive guy, an outstanding athlete and he’s being challenged by something right now,” manager Terry Collins said. “He hasn’t had the kind of year that we anticipated or he anticipated and he’s got to show us he can be one of those guys again, and today he showed us he could.” Reyes’ triple moved him ahead of Darryl Strawberry for second- place on the Mets’ all-time list for extra-base hits. Reyes has 470 extra-base hits. David Wright is the franchise leader with 658.

AJ Ramos pitched the ninth for a second straight game in a non-save situation after going eight days without an appearance. The right-hander allowed one walk and one hit, a day after surrendering two earned runs.

“It’s been tough to get him in there, and you are seeing the rust,” Collins said.
