Jenkins’ status still in question

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

Janoris Jenkins left the field after the Cowboys game last week with a large wrap on his right hand but did away with the extra protection in the locker room. He cropped up on the injury report with hand and ankle issues, but managed to practice most of the week. On Sunday, he was downgraded to questionable and making him a question mark for Monday night’s home opener against the Lions.

As the Giants’ top cornerback, Jenkins can take away an opponent’s top receiver. He covered Dez Bryant in the season opener and all Bryant could muster with nine targets were two catches for 43 yards. The Lions’ top receiver is Golden Tate, who usually lines up in the slot, meaning nickel back Dominique RodgersCromartie would draw that assignment. Jenkins would take on speedy Marvin Jones, a top outside threat.

If Jenkins is unavailable, Michael Hunter and Ross Cockrell are next in line. Hunter played only three defensive snaps in the first game. Cockrell, acquired in a trade with the Steelers, did not play any defensive snaps. In his first NFL start,

B.J. Goodson had 18 tackles last week, including 14 solo tackles.

“That’s what you want out of a middle linebacker, he didn’t really come off the field,’’ Jonathan Casillas said. “At times I come off the field and I watch him and he’s a player, he’s a ballplayer.’’

More than 40 of his former teammates will be in the building Monday night, but Eli Manning will not be able to bask in the glow of the 10-year anniversary celebration of the Super Bowl XLII upset of the Patriots.

“I’m not really going to be part of the festivities going on all week,’’ Manning said. “My mindset is on Detroit and on getting a win right now and I’ll be there for the 25th anniversary. I don’t think I’ll be playing for that long.’’ If Bobby Hart (ankle) cannot play, expect Justin Pugh to move from left guard to right tackle to fill Hart’s starting job, and for Brett Jones to come off the bench and more in at left guard.
