League GMs confident of big season for Porzingis

- By MARC BERMAN

The NBA’s general managers must agree with Kristaps Porzingis.

Porzingis boldly stated on Instagram this summer he would be an All-Star in his third season. Wednesday’s annual GM survey confirmed the league thinks so, too.

Porzingis finished tied for second with Myles Turner for player most likely to have a breakout season, with 14 percent of the vote. Much has to do with Carmelo Anthony now being with the Thunder and the Latvian becoming the Knicks’ No. 1 option.

Karl-Anthony Towns, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft, three slots ahead of Porzingis, was the top vote-getter for breakout season. In the survey, Porzingis also was fourth in the vote for best international player.

The voting makes it no surprise all 29 other GMs reportedly called the Knicks before the draft when since-ousted team president Phil Jackson briefly entertained offers.

After his preseason debut Tuesday against the Nets, in which he dropped 15 points and shot 6-of-14, Porzingis was asked if he’s already feeling the defense more focused on him now that Anthony is gone.

“Other teams will play a different type of defense when the season starts that will be much more difficult,’’ Porzingis said. “I like to be the guy who touches the ball on every offensive possession we have. I have to make the right decision on every play.”

With coach Jeff Hornacek stressing a ball-sharing offense, the one negative of Porzingis’ debut in the 115-107 loss was that he took a handful of quick, contested shots instead of moving the ball. But as a 7-foot-3 power forward, it’s rare his shot is heavily contested. He made one sick crossover move for a lefty slam.

Anthony made his Thunder debut Tuesday in Tulsa, Okla., scoring 19 points in 19 minutes on 7-of-13 shooting in a loss to the Rockets.

“I texted him,’’ Porzingis said. “He said it’s different. … He was here for a long time. I’m just happy he has a new challenge now in his career. It’s going to be different.”

The Knicks made their first cut: Forward Jamel Artis, who scored five points in seven minutes Tuesday.
