Mets, others interested in McEwing

- By MIKE PUMA

The Mets are fishing from the same pond as other teams looking for a manager, making overlap inevitable.

One potential candidate, Joe McEwing, will be interviewed by the Tigers, according to a report, as the Mets proceed with their own search for a manager.

McEwing, Robin Ventura, Kevin Long, Alex Cora, Bob Geren and Chip Hale are among the Mets’ early candidates to replace Terry Collins, who resigned Sunday after seven seasons as manager.

Other than the Mets and Tigers, the Phillies have a managerial vacancy, but speculation has increased in recent weeks the Red Sox could fire John Farrell if the team doesn’t advance in the postseason.

As of Wednesday the Mets had not yet contacted the 44-year-old McEwing about an interview, according to a source. There was thought earlier in the week that Sandy Alderson would first focus on Cora and Geren, who are set to begin the postseason with the Astros and Dodgers, respectively, but there was no indication Wednesday that either bench coach had spoken to the Mets’ general manager.

The Astros will begin the ALDS on Thursday against the Red Sox. The Dodgers begin the NLDS on Friday.

McEwing, nicknamed “Super Joe” during his playing career, was popular among Mets fans for his versatility and scrappy approach to the game. He also has a strong ally in David Wright, who credits McEwing for showing him how to play the game in the correct manner. McEwing has spent the past six seasons as a coach with the White Sox and was promoted to bench coach in 2017.

It’s possible the Tigers’ interest in McEwing could expedite the Mets scheduling an interview with him, but not likely.
