No sympathy for today’s cabbies

-

Dear John: Alas, pity the poor cab driver who never says hello, good day or good evening (but sometimes grunts if you are lucky), and who 50 percent of the time takes the wrong route to the simplest destination — with or without GPS.

And who never opens a door or the trunk, and most of the time doesn’t have change for a 20. Why should I tip?

Then there are the Uber-doobies, who can’t go around the corner without a GPS and still get it wrong.

And, lastly, the cars for hire. You go to the airport, it’s $50. I give him explicit directions from East 83rd Street to the Triborough Bridge, because I have had drivers attempt to go over the 59th Street Bridge or through the Midtown Tunnel.

When I arrive at said airport, I get the bill: $50, plus $10 for tolls — and a blank space for the tip.

“But, sir, you have E-ZPass, and the toll is only $5.54,” I say.

“That’s what the company charges (grunt, grunt),” he replies. And, so, for trying to rip me off, the driver gets no tip!

I’ve lived in Manhattan 40-plus years and drove a cab at night while attending CCNY.

I was polite and attentive to my passengers, and did very, very well.

I do not feel at all sorry for the drivers of today. H.S. Dear H.S.: Ah, the good ol’ days. Remember when the nice guy at the gas station would clean your windows and check your oil without asking?

Today’s today. Give the guy a damn tip and stop complaining.
