WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES

-

Joe Girardi made several mistakes during Friday night’s ugly 9-8, 13-inning loss to the Indians in Game 2 of the ALDS, but he is far from the only coach or manager to ever have an error in judgement in important spots. Here’s a look:

VIKTOR TIKHONOV

WINTER OLYMPICS (1980), USSR vs. USA The USSR coach pulled goalie Vladislav Tretiak, generally considered the best goalie in the world, after the heavy underdog U.S. team tied the semifinal game, 2-2. Team USA won, 4-3, in the Miracle on Ice.

GUY LEWIS

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP (1983), HOUSTON vs. N.C. STATE Lewis called for his star-studded Cougars to go into a slowdown offense after his heavily favored squad pulled out in front of the upstart Wolfpack by seven midway through the second half. Jim Valvano’s N.C. State team came back to win, 54-52, in one of the greatest upsets in college hoops history.

GRADY LITTLE

ALCS — GAME 7 (2003) YANKEES VS. RED SOX With a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth, Little opts to leave Pedro Martinez, who had already thrown 120 pitches in the game. The rally begins, the Yankees win 6-5 and move on to the World Series.

PETE CARROLL

SUPER BOWL XLIX (2015), SEAHAWKS vs. PATRIOTS He didn’t call for a handoff to running back Marshawn Lynch at the 1-yard line for the go-ahead touchdown in the final seconds. Instead, they ran a pass play, and Russell Wilson threw a gameclinching interception.

BUCK SHOWALTER

WILD CARD (2016), ORIOLES VS. BLUE JAYS The Orioles lost an 11-inning wild-card game under Showalter without ever using his best reliever, Zach Britton, despite having him warm up in the ninth, 10th and 11th innings. The left-handed closer had finished the regular season with 47 saves and a 1.94 ERA.
