Schneid starts probe of Weinstein Co.
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has opened a civil -rights probe into The Weinstein Company following sweeping allegations of rape and sexual assault against ousted co-founder Harvey Weinstein.
Schneiderman’s Civil Rights Bureau sent a subpoena to the movie company Monday seeking a laundry list of documents — including all documents and records related to complaints of sexual harassment or age and gender discrimination, and details as to how the complaint was handled, according to a source familiar with the investigation.
The AG wants to know if formal investigations were ever initiated of the claims, why there was or was not an investigation, and wants to see records pertaining to any settlements or dispositions.
He also wants to see files on management’s criteria to hire and fire employees and to cast performers.
Schneiderman also wants paperwork and communications related to the eight settlements Weinstein reached with his accusers. The investigation will also examine if the company should be held financially responsible for any misconduct.
“No New Yorker should be forced to walk into a workplace ruled by sexual intimidation, harassment or fear,” Schneiderman said. “If sexual harassment or discrimination is pervasive at a company, we want to know.”
Weinstein, 65, was forced out of his eponymous company’s board last week after being fired following several allegations of sexual abuse.
The Weinstein Co. did not return requests for comment.
