Giants’ sub WRs can’t get job done

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

It sure looks as if the replacements need to be replaced.

In two games without Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall and Sterling Shepard, Giants wide receivers have a total of seven receptions for 67 yards. Tavarres King has two catches for 8 yards on six targets. Roger Lewis has two catches for 27 yards on eight targets. And Travis Rudolph has three catches for 32 yards on seven targets. The two games were against the Broncos and Seahawks, owners of two of the top secondaries in the NFL, but this is paltry production.

It is difficult to come down too hard on these receivers, considering Lewis was on the roster as the No. 4 receiver, and the Giants months ago deemed King and Rudolph unworthy of roster spots. Against the Seahawks, King caught one pass for 1 yard and disagrees with the narrative the new receivers simply cannot get open.

“Check the tape,’’ King said. “I felt we did a great job of getting open. Felt like we were open when we needed to be open, when we had the opportunities to be open. Check the tape.’’ Ben McAdoo checked the tape. “We need better execution and better details in our pass protection and in our pass game,” McAdoo said. “I think you’ve got to take a look at each play individually. Each play tells its own story. I think we had some opportunities there, and we didn’t cash in on our opportunities.’’

➤ Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie said he knew, coming off his suspension, he would not get much playing time in his first game back. There were 76 snaps on defense, and he was on the field for only 16 of them.

Four cornerbacks got more action for the Giants: Eli Apple (74 snaps), Janoris Jenkins (67), Donte Deayon (23) and Ross Cockrell (21). Rodgers-Cromartie did not thrive in the reduced role. He was targeted three times, according to Pro Football Focus, and allowed three catches for 42 yards and one touchdown for a perfect 158.3 passer rating against him.
