This Week’s Wins by Dems Are Really No Big Surprise
As a former Democrat (now independent), I don’t fully agree with John Podhoretz’s column (“The Backlash Is Here,” Nov. 9) regarding the implications of Election Day 2017.
Gubernatorial losses in New Jersey and Virginia are hardly a surprise. Cobalt-blue New Jersey was practically a foregone conclusion, and NYC’s results were set in stone. Virginia has not elected a Republican to statewide office (i.e. governor or Senate) since 2009.
This began before President Trump was elected, although I admit I’m sorely disappointed in his performance and appointments.
The GOP must learn where it’s not worth it to field candidates and waste time and money. Robert Sieger Manhattan
Trump used the Republican Party to get what he wanted — the presidency. Republicans thought they would use Trump to get what they wanted — passage of their legislative agenda.
Trump won, and Re- publicans look ridiculous.
He has nothing to lose, besides people’s respect. Republicans, on the other hand, have everything to lose. Hence, the recent gubernatorial election results.
The GOP is tied to Trump’s hip for at least three more years. Good luck with that. Bob Bascelli Seaford
The Democrats’ joyous celebration of victories in two blue states, by Ralph Northam in Virginia and Phil Murphy in New Jer- sey, is known as “misdirection” in the magic business. It’s far more preferable than facing the ongoing and mushrooming crisis within the Democratic Party that exDNC boss Donna Brazile has brought to light.
Is anybody really surprised that Democrats won in these states?
All the hoopla that these two elections damaged Trump’s presidency is just fake news. Myron Hecker New City
Once again we see the anti-Trump media putting the most negative spin possible on the gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey.
(Note: Neither GOP candidate fully aligned him-or herself with Trump’s America First Agenda.)
The losses are merely confirmations of the leftist majorities in these two Eastern states. It’s not a condemnation of Trump. William A. Pauwels Franklin Lakes, NJ
