BUZZ BOOK: A guide for working mothers — with attitude

- Mackenzie Dawson

Sarah Lacy’s book “A Uterus is a Feature, Not a Bug: The Working Woman’s Guide to Overthrowing the Patriarchy” (Harper Business, out Tuesday) kicks off with the journalist being chased by an angry crowd in Nigeria while five months pregnant. It’s tough to follow that up, especially in a book about working motherhood, but Lacy manages to keep up the pace with a book that is part memoir, part guide, part call to arms and packed with other incredible anecdotes. (One such anecdote: After a string of critical articles that she had written about Uber in 2012, the company hired op- position research to conduct an aggressive smear campaign against Lacy. For weeks, she had an armed security team protecting her and her family.)

With chapter titles such as “Benevolent Sexism and You,” “We Need a Sheryl” and “Everyone Loves the Angry Bitch,” the CEO and founder of tech news site Pando.com talks about sexism in the tech industry, single motherhood, discrimination and the importance of women supporting each other — “When “W a woman comes forward, you stand up and take the arrows with her,” she writes. “Don’t let her stand alone.” Books aimed at working mothers are often dry or try too hard to appeal to everyone. This book is neither of those things. Will most women directly relate to her experiences as a tech entrepreneur? Perhaps not. But they’ll have fun reading about them, and the book is an in- spiring reminder of how much mothers can accomplish when they decide that ‘No’ is not an option.

“I was a woman in my late 30s with a newborn, no co-founder and no technical knowledge, starting a company in Silicon Valley,” she writes. “I was also an extrovert. That pretty much went against every cliche ... of the Silicon Valley founder. I was the exact inverse of the twentysomething nerdy dropout/Stanford grad with no social life who could work 24 hours a day in a dungeon of his office.” —
