Top prospect exits ’Zona game

- — Dan Martin

Justus Sheffield, one of the Yankees’ top pitching prospects, left his start in the Arizona Fall League on Saturday after taking a comebacker off his left leg while pitching for Scottsdale.

The 21-year-old lefty threw a few warmup pitches off the mound after the play, but was removed from the game in the top of the second against Glendale.

Acquired in 2016 from Cleveland in the deal that sent Andrew Miller to the Indians, Sheffield spent most of last season with Double-A Trenton, where he went 7-6 with a 3.18 ERA in 17 starts.

He could play a part in the rotation as soon as some time next season and has pitched well for Scottsdale. Through four starts, Sheffield has a 2.37 ERA and is, along with right-hander Albert Abreu, among the best performers in the AFL, according to some scouts.

Now that Masahiro Tanaka has opted to remain with the Yankees instead of becoming a free agent, the rotation figures to have Tanaka, Luis Severino, Sonny Gray and Jordan Montgomery.

CC Sabathia is a free agent and could return and the Yankees remain very interested in Shohei Otani, the 23-year-old Japanese star who is considered among the best pitchers — and hitters — in Nippon Professional Baseball.

Sheffield, along with Abreu, Chance Adams and Domingo Acevedo, could provide depth.
