Coach calls out ‘effort’

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

No, the Giants did not quit in their latest debacle, a 31-21 loss to the previously winless 49ers. Ben McAdoo, though, said he detected something that sounds oh-so-close to quitting.

“There are plays we are capable of making and the desire to finish wasn’t consistent,’’ McAdoo said. “I need to coach it better and we need to do it better. Not every play and not every player, but it did show up on tape.’’

McAdoo stressed Monday, “I’m not here to throw anybody under the bus’’ as he was peppered with questions about Janoris Jenkins, who was not exactly a dervish on the field in his first game coming off a suspension for violating team rules. Jenkins was flat-out beaten on an 83-yard touchdown by Marquise Goodwin and, even worse, did nothing to impede the progress of tight end Garrett Celek on a 47-yard touchdown.

“I think he got caught up on a big body there, he needs to find a way to get the big body on the ground,’’ McAdoo said.

Asked about Jenkins’ effort, McAdoo said, “There were some players in the ballgame who need to show a consistent desire to finish better.’’

Why play a player who does not show that desire?

“Well, that’s something we’re taking a look at,’’ McAdoo said. “We have a 46-man roster on game-day and the players who are going to go out and do it the way we ask ‘em to do it, and do it on a consistent basis, they’re gonna get a chance to play.’’

LB Jonathan Casillas returned after missing three games with a neck injury and could not keep up with Celek on what became a 47-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Afterward, Casillas said he was hustling, but was too tired to stay with Celek.

“Jonathan is a guy who hasn’t played a lot of football as of late and this time of year, practice reps are tough to come by,’’ McAdoo said.

DT Damon “Snacks’’ Har

rison was helped off the field with an ankle injury, and McAdoo said he expects Harrison will be limited in practice this week. RT Justin

Pugh aggravated his back issue and will be out for a while. “He’s probably going to have to sit out a little bit,’’ McAdoo said.
