Zeke opts to drop his appeal

Ezekiel Elliott is done fighting the NFL.

The Cowboys running back has decided to forgo filing further appeals and will serve the remainder of his six-game suspension, Elliott’s agents said in a statement Wednesday.

Elliott has sought to get his suspension overturned since the start of the season after the league gave him the baseline ban for domestic violence cases. The 22-year-old has vehemently denied allegations of domestic abuse against ex-girlfriend Tiffany Thompson.

“Mr. Elliott’s desire for closure in this matter is in his best interest, as well as the best interests of his teammates, family and friends,” said his agents, Rocky Arceneaux and Frank Salzano, in a joint statement. “This decision is in no way an admission of any wrongdoing, and Mr. Elliott is pleased that the legal fight mounted by he and his team resulted in disclosing many hidden truths regarding this matter as well [as] publicly exposing the NFL’s mismanagement of its disciplinary process.

“Mr. Elliott will maximize this time away from the game and come back even stronger both on and off the field. He intends to release a final personal statement in the upcoming weeks and until then we have no further comment.”

Elliott, the 2016 Rookie of the Year, will not return until Week 16, when the Cowboys face the Seahawks on Christmas Eve.

Elliott began serving his suspension for Sunday’s game against the Falcons, which the Cowboys lost 27-7. He already was in line to miss the team’s next four games after the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals denied his request last week to further delay his suspension.

Elliott’s next appeals hearing had been scheduled for Dec. 1.

Just two weeks ago, Elliott said he had not considered accepting the punishment and would continue the legal battle for the sake of his “reputation.” He called the situation “bigger than football” and every day “worth fighting [for].”
