Ike could strike back — as lefty reliever

-

HERE are two interesting minor league free-agent lefty relievers to watch — Ike Davis and Anthony Gose.

Both transformed from position players last season and both are trying to latch on with organizations at a time when teams are looking for versatility and both Davis and Gose can potentially provide other elements if they prove they can handle the pitching.

“He is committed to doing this,” agent Lou Nero said of Davis, who threw six games in relief last year for the Dodgers’ rookie ball team, working 5 ²/₃ shutout innings with six strikeouts. In theory, Davis could always provide a lefty bat off the bench and/or an emergency first baseman also if needed.

Gose pitched in 11 games for a Single-A Detroit affiliate, allowing nine runs in 10 ²/₃ innings, but also striking out 14 and hitting the upper-90s with his fastball. Gose also would provide a pinch runner and a defensive possibility in the outfield, and his representatives said there already has been plenty of interest in him.

Julio Urias, who underwent surgery for a torn left shoulder capsule last June, is progressing well, according to Dodger off icials, who believe he could return to the team as early as May.

Urias, still just 21, was viewed as the Dodgers’ top young pitcher before enduring an injury that, at minimum, will cast doubt whether he can return to a lofty status.

It is not just that the Blue Jays led the majors in scoring with 891 runs in 2015 — they led it by 127 runs. They were pretty good again in 2016 with 759 runs, ninth best in the majors.

But last year it was 693 runs, 26th in the majors. That reflects the defection of Edwin Encarnacion, the collapse of Jose Bautista and the decline of/injuries to Russell Martin and Troy Tulowitzki, in particular.

Still, instead of trading their one prime offensive player, Josh Donaldson, before his walk year, the Blue Jays are looking to upgrade around him by adding at least one corner bat — and, perhaps, two — while looking for a middle-infield depth piece who can play often to protect them because of how often Tulowitzki and second baseman Devon Travis are injured.
