HORSE IS NYPD ‘CHEW’
Tourist: It bit me!
An NYPD horse took a bite out of a Pennsylvania tourist’s arm as she was viewing the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, a new lawsuit charges.
The 10-year-old chestnut gelding named Madison (right) is “like a New Yorker,” his handler, Officer Buyukdag Mehmet, said in a 2016 interview about the department’s Mounted Unit.
“He’s friendly, but if you pester him, he’ll let you know he doesn’t like it,” Mehmet told AM New York.
But Wilkes-Barre resident Judith Solomon, 60, insists she didn’t nag Madison, but claims the horse lunged forward and bit down on her left arm on Dec. 21, 2016.
The equine attack left Solomon with “permanent soreness and a permanent lump at the location of the bite,” court papers say. Solomon was in town with three friends when she was bitten by the horse “without provocation” while taking pictures of the Christmas tree, her suit claims. “The NYPD officer did not restrain the horse at the time of the incident and instead smirked and
laughed at Mrs. Solomon as she stood there in extreme pain,” according to court papers.
The unidentified mounted cop also refused to assist Solomon or document the incident, the suit alleges.
Solomon claims a police substation turned her away when she tried to report the incident. She filed an online complaint the next day.
Her attorney, Kimberly Kostun, told The Post that an NYPD investigation confirmed that Madison bit her client but was “inconclusive” about whether his handler was aware of the attack.
Solomon is suing Madison’s handler, the NYPD and the city for unspecified damages.
An NYPD spokesperson declined to comment, citing pending litigation.
