MAYOR IN 57G MESS

‘Misused’ elex $$

A Westchester mayor swiped at least $57,000 frfrom his campaign war chest and inaugural fund to cover personal expenses, including late car payments, a $2,000 Chanel purse, a family trip to Mexico and a $114 meal at a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant, authorities said Monday.

Richard Thomas, now 35, was elected as Mount Vernon’s youngest-ever mayor in 2015, and routinely tapped into his Friends of Richard Thomas campaign account and deposited the cash into his personal checking account, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman charged.

The Democratic mayor’s (inset) alleged slush-fund scheme began prior to his election, when Thomas’ personal bank account was running low, the AG said.

On Oct. 2, 2015, he withdrew $6,400 from the campaign account and deposited it into his personal account to pay more than $1,800 for overdue payments on a new Ford Explorer.

Thomas also used the funds to pay $2,050 for rent on his family home, $85 to the IRS, $35 each for Nordstrom and Home Depot credit-card accounts and $342 for homeowner’s insurance, court papers state.

He also allegedly used his campaign credit card on a family trip to Mexico in December 2015, charging $118 for breakfast for four at JFK Airport.

Then he blew $114 on a family meal at a Bubba Gump at an airport in Mexico City — and allegedly tried to cover up that charge as a “volunteer appreciation event,” according to filings. After taking office, Thomas allegedly embarked on a “new scheme” by using his inaugural-committee account to pay off more than $44,000 on his American Express card, which was used for the Chanel bag and Mexico trip.

Thomas was arraigned Monday on charges of grand larceny and offering a false instrument for filing.

“The allegations are not true and I want to reassure the people of Mount Vernon that this has nothing to do with my service in office as it relates to the campaign,” Thomas said.

He faces up to six years in prison if convicted.
