Vacancy likely at TE

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

The Jets may be looking for a new tight end.

A source said Austin Seferian-Jenkins is likely leaving as a free agent. The Jets and Seferian-Jenkins have been negotiating since before the end of last season, but remain far apart on a deal. The Jets have offered him $4 million a season. Judging from the current tight-end market, though, Seferian-Jenkins likely can get somewhere around $6 million-$7 million a year.

Seferian-Jenkins is drawing plenty of interest from other teams. The Packers, Colts, Dolphins, Seahawks and 49ers are all possible destinations for him, according to a source.

It is possible the Jets and Seferian-Jenkins could still make a deal, but it would be a surprise at this point.

The Jets claimed Seferian-Jenkins in 2016 after the Buccaneers cut him following a DUI arrest. He turned his life around last offseason, stopped drinking and lost 30 pounds. He had 50 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns last year for the Jets.

Everyone expected the Saints and Drew Brees to agree to a deal before free agency, but they still have not and teams can speak to his agent. The NFL Network reported the Vikings and other teams in the market for a quarterback have checked in with his agent. It would not be a surprise if the Jets made a call at least for due diligence.

The Jets have been in the market for an outside pass rusher for about the past decade and they brought in a free agent on a visit to potentially fill that hole.

Former Cowboys defensive end Benson Mayowa visited the Jets on Monday, a source confirmed. Mayowa had six sacks in 2016 for the Cowboys, but just one last year.

Dallas cut Mayowa last Wednesday. Mayowa is free to visit teams and sign whenever he wants.
