Moonwalk, don't run, for these
The loafers Michael Jackson wore before he introduced the world to the moonwalk are going up for auction. The bidding starts at $10,000.
The King of Pop wore the patentleather Florsheim Imperials during rehearsals for his iconic performance of “Billie Jean” at the “Motown 25” anniversary special in 1983, according to the catalog description.
It’s unclear if Jackson wore the loafers during the televised performance, too, though he did refer to the pair as his “magic shoes,” according to a letter of authenticity.
LA-based GWS Auctions is putting the shoes and several other pieces of Jackson memorabilia under the hammer on May 26, ahead of what would have been the Gloved One’s 60th birthday, in August.
“Anything related to Michael Jackson is extraordinary, and to have something so incredibly historical as these shoes worn by Michael when he first did that now famous moonwalk is beyond special,” Brigitte Kruse, owner of GWS Auctions, told CNN. “We are so very honored to be able to offer them at auction.”
The loafers were owned by choreographer Lester Wilson, who said Jackson gave him the autographed pair (above) in his dressing room after rehearsing with his brothers for the special, the auction house said.
It’s possible he also wore them during the performance, GWS said.
They’ve been kept in “wonderful” condition for their age, though there are some evident signs of age on the soles, Kruse said.
The music superstar died in 2009 at age 50 after suffering cardiac arrest at his Holmby Hills, Calif., home.
