Blas aid$ schools, rips gov
Mayor de Blasio announced an additional $125 million in school funding Wednesday, while accusing Gov. Cuomo of failing to adequately help shore up classroom coffers.
Drawing from city revenues, de Blasio said the cash will go to 854 schools next year that are currently underfunded according to the city Department of Education.
Flanked by city schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, de Blasio said the details will be issued at a preliminary budget hearing Thursday.
Hizzoner then used the City Hall press conference to bash his gubernatorial nemesis.
“We’ve waited years for the state to act, but our kids can’t wait another day,” de Blasio said.
In 2007, the city devised a formula it calls Fair Student Funding that aims to funnel money to schools most in need.
But while some schools, especially those with generous PTAs, are flush with cash, de Blasio said many others routinely fall short of their FSF threshold.
The new funding, de Blasio said, will ensure that all schools get at least 90 percent of their goal.
De Blasio accused Cuomo of failing to adhere to the FSF funding guidelines, while the governor has countered that the city Department of Education routinely mishandles the money it already has.
