SUNY makes room for palsy caregiver

- Selim Algar, Carl Campanile

SUNY Purchase officials plan to accommodate a 19year-old student from Brooklyn with cerebral palsy — two days after The Post reported the college claimed it couldn’t find an extra room for his caregiver.

The sudden shift also came hours after Gov. Cuomo “urged” college officials to make space for Nick Astor and his aide.

Nick’s dad, Michael, said the school is finalizing a deal to provide rooms for his son — who needs help to dress, bathe and eat — and his caregiver on the same floor.

The elder Astor was awaiting an official proposal from the school.

“We have to see, but I don’t want to stand down just yet. This took a tremendous effort. We had to mobilize an army,” he said of the negotiations.

The Post reported on Nick’s plight Tuesday and Cuomo issued a statement Wednesday night, saying, “I applaud Nick Astor for his achievements and resolve, and I have urged SUNY Purchase to accommodate him.”

Michael Astor said he’s happy his son’s situation is being resolved, but warned he won’t be satisfied until SUNY revises its policies concerning the disabled.

“If we can’t use this to help other people in this situation then this will be a bit of a hollow victory,” he said.

The college had no immediate comment.
