MLB: Harper hurt on HBP in Nats’ twinbill split
Nationals slugger Bryce Harper was forced to leave soon after being hit by a pitch, then Reds star Joey Votto went wild when he got drilled Saturday night in Washington. The Reds won a tame opener, 7-1. Things quickly turned testy in the nightcap, won by the Nationals 6-2.
Harper was hit in the right kneecap in the sixth by a pitch from Austin Brice. Harper struggled to put weight on his leg, but stayed in the game before leaving in the seventh after laboring defensively on a double in the gap by Mason Williams.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia is expected to step down at the end of this season, according to a report by The Athletic. Scioscia has managed the Angels since 2000 and is the longest-tenured manager in the majors. He led the team to its only World Series title in 2002.
NFL: Seahawks work out ex-Giant DRC
The Seahawks, with a huge need at defensive back, are working out veteran cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who was released by the Giants in March, according to a report from NFL Network.
GOLF: Westwood out of PGA Championship
Lee Westwood has withdrawn from the PGA Championship next week with an unspecified injury, missing the major for only the second time since he first played it in 1997.
In Blaine, Minn., Kenny Perry tied a tournament record with a 12-under 60 and has a five-shot lead after two rounds of the Champions Tour’s 3M Championship. His two-round score of 126 is a tournament record.
In Lytham St. Annes, England, Pornanong Phatlum had a solid 3-under-par 69 and held on to her overnight oneshot lead of the Women’s British Open after the third round.
ETC.: Cejudo stuns Johnson in UFC 227
In Los Angeles, Henry Cejudo ended Demetrious Johnson’s nearly six-year reign as the UFC flyweight champion, earning a split-decision victory for a stunning upset at UFC 227. Cejudo (13-2) won 28-27 on two of the three judges’ scorecards to beat Johnson (27-3-1), who had won 13 consecutive fights since 2012 and had defended his 125-pound belt a UFC-record 11 straight times. Candice Dupree scored 25 points and the Indiana Fever held the Liberty without a basket in the fourth quarter for a 68-55 win in White Plans. The Liberty (7-20), led by Tina Charles’ 11 points, were up 53-52 heading into the final period before going 0 for 15 from the field in the fourth. Second-half substitute Erik Hurtado’s goal in the 87th minute gave the Vancouver Whitecaps a 2-2 tie with New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. Jesus Medina and Valentin Castellanos, with his first career MLS goal in the 46th minute, scored for NYCFC (13-5-5).
