TRAINING DAY

- —Zach Braziller

LUVU IN THE AIR

Outside linebacker Frankie Luvu, an undrafted free agent, continues to impress. He had two tackles in the backfield and again saw time with the first team, which also was the case in Saturday’s Green & White scrimmage.

HEAD IN THE GAME

Officials missed an obvious penalty under the newly established helmet rule when safety Doug Middleton initiated contact with his helmet to wide receiver Chad Hansen’s shoulder after a reception. It will be hard for the Jets to get acclimated to these new rules if they aren’t reminded of them in practice.

CAUGHT MY EYE

After a day off, Todd Bowles put his players to work under humid and hot conditions. Monday was the team’s longest practice of camp: 2 hours and 50 minutes full of hitting and 11-on-11 team drills.

QB DERBY

It was another slow day for Josh McCown, who spent most of it on the sideline as Sam Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater received a majority of the reps. Darnold started fast, completing his first six passes, before fading somewhat. It was an uneven day for the rookie, who missed on some passes he’s been hitting on, though he did throw a touchdown pass to rookie running back Trenton Cannon, a play in which he went through his progressions quickly before finding the open receiver. Bridgewater started slowly, but finished far better, making quick decisions and showing accuracy.

MEDICAL REPORT

After being held out of Saturday’s Green & White scrimmage, S Marcus Maye, WR Charone Peake and WR Terrelle Pryor returned to practice. DT Steve McLendon, LB David Bass, LT Kelvin Beachum, CB Parry Nickerson, DL Deon Simon, S Kacy Rodgers II, RB Thomas Rawls, TE Jordan Leggett, WR Quincy Enunwa and LB Kelvin PierreLouis didn’t practice. Cannon left late in practice and was getting his left ankle/leg worked on by a trainer.
