Fetus found in jet bathroom at LaG
A cleaning crew found a fetus in a toilet aboard an airliner parked at La Guardia Airport Tuesday — and police sources say it was left by a Brooklyn teen who suffered a miscarriage on board and fled after the plane landed.
The 18-year-old East Flatbush woman left the fetus behind on American Airlines Flight 1942 after it landed on Monday night from Charlotte Douglas (NC) International Airport, the sources said.
The other passengers had deplaned when the pregnant teen rushed to the bathroom while her twin sister stood guard outside, telling the crew it was an “emergency,” a lawenforcement source said.
A flight attendant told police the woman came out looking ill, the sources said.
The teen checked into Kings County Hospital at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
A crew consisting of young women conducted an initial “express” cleaning of the lavatory and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary, an airline spokesman said.
But when members of a full cleaning crew boarded for a more thorough scouring on Tuesday morning, they made the gruesome discovery inside the Air- bus A321 at Hangar 5 at about 7:30 a.m., according to the sources.
Police want to interview the twins, but believe there was no criminality involved, law-enforcement sources said.
The fetus was between three to six months along, the sources added.
The city Medical Examiner’s Office will determining how the fetus died.
“The OCME can confirm we’re investigating what we believe to be a human fetus found deceased on an airplane,” the agency said in a statement.
American Airlines said in a statement, “As we continue to learn more about this tragic and sensitive situation, we are actively cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation.”
