Bowles won’t reveal opener plan for QBs

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

Todd Bowles played coy Wednesday when asked what his deployment plan for his quarterbacks would be in Friday’s preseason opener against the Falcons.

“Everybody on that field dressed better be ready to play,” Bowles said.

Earlier, Bowles said on ESPN Radio all three quarterbacks would play in the game. The most likely scenario is Josh McCown starting and playing a series or two, then Teddy Bridgewater playing the rest of the first half and rookie Sam Darnold getting the second half.

Darnold threw another interception in practice Wednesday after throwing two on Tuesday. All of the interceptions came on deep passes. Darnold has shown flashes of what he can be in practice with some pretty throws, but he has also looked like a rookie at times.

“I don’t think he strug- gled,” Bowles said. “I think that’s part of it. I think everybody is on the field working to get better. It’s not Sam struggling. There are days when the defense misses some things. It’s part of being in camp. It’s part of being the quarterback. It’s part of the position. We’re very happy where he is right now. We’ll go from there.”

Bowles was asked if Darnold has caught up since he missed the first three practices of training camp while negotiating his contract. Bowles said it’s hard to tell, but he believes Darnold is fine in terms of the playbook.

“He’s sharp and he studies,” Bowles said. “I don’t see him behind as far as catching up mentally.”

The Jets will travel to Richmond, Va., after Friday’s game for three days of joint practices with the Redskins. There has been some back and forth between some Redskins players and Jets receiver Terrelle Pryor, who played for Washington last year. It sounds as if there is the making of some trainingcamp scuffles, but Bowles said he is not worried.

“Coach [ Jay] Gruden coaches his team well,” Bowles said. “We’ll do the same thing. It’s just talk and banter. We’re going down there for them to make us better. Hopefully, we make them better. We can better as a team. Anything else to me is nonsense.”

WR Quincy Enunwa [hand] is still not practicing, but he did not have the cast/wrap on his right hand that he had been wearing. … OLB Lorenzo Mauldin limped off the practice field. Bowles said Mauldin had some leg tightness earlier and it could be related. … Kicker Cairo Santos is “a little tight,” according to Bowles, and has been held out of practice.
