WR Enunwa ready to get back on field

Quincy Enunwa can hardly wait for Friday night, but it won’t be because of MetLife Stadium bragging rights.

For the first time in 19 months, Enunwa is expected to play in a game, when the Jets meet the Giants in the annual preseason showdown between the two locals.

“I’m obviously going to be very excited,” said Enunwa, who missed all of last season after undergoing neck surgery to repair a bulging disc and has yet to play in the preseason this year due to a thumb injury that has healed. “I’ve definitely been kind of anxious to get back in a game.

“It’s definitely important to kind of get my feet wet before the season starts, get out there, make some plays if I can. Just have some fun again.”

Coach Todd Bowles was typically evasive when asked if the 6-foot-2 Enunwa would play against the Giants. The wideout said he was hoping to be in action. It certainly seems as if that will be the case. Enunwa has been practicing fully and believes he’s ready to go.

“I’ve been preparing for a while now to get back out there,” the 26-year-old Enunwa said.

The former sixth-round pick had a strong 2016, producing 58 receptions for 857 yards and four touchdowns and was penciled in as the team’s No. 1 receiver last year before the neck injury. Despite Enunwa’s absence, the Jets receivers were a surprise, as Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse both put up impressive numbers. A year later, Enunwa and newcomer Terrelle Pryor join them to form what could be a versatile and quality unit.

“We’re very capable of doing a lot of great things,” Enunwa said. “We’re just all so different, so that helps a lot. We all have our own talents, and you put those together, that can be a pretty good combo. I’m excited to see what we can all do together.”

Enunwa said he believes he’s physically back to where he was before needing neck surgery. He doesn’t think about the neck and isn’t worried about the first big hit.

“I’m ready to go out there and perform,” he said. “I’m confident I’ll do my job.”

Friday likely will be his first chance to prove it.
