3 YOUNG DARK HORSES
KIKI BERTENS
The 26-year-old Dutch baseliner is erasing her reputation as a strict clay-courter. After advancing to the quarterfinals on grass at Wimbledon, she won Cincinnati last week taking out No. 1 Simona Halep.
ARYNA SABALENKA
The Belarussian 20-year-old just won in New Haven. At 6-foot, she rips hard from both wings and led her small country to the Fed Cup final in 2017.
AMANDA ANISIMOVA
The 16-year who was born in Colts Neck, N.J., received a wild card into the Open after winning the Junior Open last year. She became the second youngest player ever ranked in the top 200. The 5-11 right-hander is at No. 135 and Jersey agent Max Eisenbud thinks he’s got the next Sharapova.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
Tennis’ “Greek Freak’’ advanced to the Rogers Cup Finals in Toronto on his 20th birthday, losing to Rafael Nadal in the finals. Along the way he took out Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and Kevin Anderson. It was a stunning performance for a player ranked 168th last year and who hadn’t won a tour match until 2018. He’s got the 15th seed and Roger Federer comparisons with an artful strokes that includes a one-handed backhand.
FRANCES TIAFOE
The 20-year-old is — still — on the rise. He won a Delray Beach title in February — the first American to win an ATP Tour event since 2002. Tiafoe nearly upset Federer in Round 1 of the Open last year. Tennis America needs Tiafoe to thrive soon.
DENIS SHAPOVALOV
The 19-year-old Canadian came in with buzz last year and got to the fourth round. He’s experienced growing pains but is as good a bet as any to lead the Next Generation class.
