EXTRA HELPING

Gang Green add fourth quarterback

- By BRIAN LEWIS

The Jets added a fourth quarterback Sunday when they signed John Wolford, who had been in rookie minicamp as a non-roster player.

A four-year starter for Wake Forest, he threw an ACC-best 29 touchdowns last season.

“We were thinking about practice squad. We wanted to see if he can learn the system a little bit, so we brought in a guy a week early because we had an extra spot to use,” coach Todd Bowles said of Wolford, who could get some mop up work Thursday against the Eagles if he picks up the playbook quickly enough.

“I’ll see how much he learns. It’d be unfair to him if he didn’t know [the playbook], but if he can learn a few things, he may get in the second half.” The Jets waived Lucky White

head with an injury designation after the receiver/returner didn’t play against the Giants.

➤ DL Steve McLendon (leg), CB Rashard Robinson (groin) and RB Elijah McGuire (foot) were all out. Bowles confirmed McGuire won’t be ready for the opener.

“He won’t be ready the f irst game, but I don’t know where he is as far as him coming along,” Bowles said, playing coy about the short-term IR. “We have to make sure he’s where he needs to be. I’ll talk to the training staff and see what we want to do. … It’s a matter of if he is on the plus side of it or the minus side of it.” ➤ Starting receiver Jermaine Kearse is still hurt, and the Jets have no clarity on whether his abdomen injury is severe or not. “We’re not sure yet,” Bowles said. “He’s getting better every day. Right now, I’ll just see how he is next week. Day-to-day, weekto-week.”

➤ After LB Jordan Jenkins got penalized and f ined $20,054 for falling on Redskins quarterback

Alex Smith, Bowles said he’s not big on the NFL making such plays a point of emphasis.

“That’s going to be tough,” Bowles said. “We can practice it with bags, but you’re taught to hit the quarterback and not drive him into the ground. I get that part, but now you have to hit and kind of fall to the side. You’re asking a 300-pounder to be a ballerina all the time. It’s going to be kind of tough.” ➤ The Jets will see draft bust Christian Hackenberg. Philadelphia coach Doug Pederson told NJ.com the quarterback will face Gang Green at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday.

After the Jets traded away Hackenberg, he got cut by the Raiders in the offseason and picked up by the Eagles.
