Super Bowles: Coach says title is the goal

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

This is the week for predictions on the upcoming NFL season. P undits will be weighing in with how eve r y team wi l l do and who is bound for the Super Bowl. But don’t expect any predictions from Todd Bowles. The fourth-year Jets coach never gets into making bold statements or forecasting greatness for his team. But he is willing to say this team’s goal is to win the Super Bowl come February.

“Our goal is take one game at a time and get to the playoffs and win the Super Bowl, and that’s our expectation,” Bowles said. “That’s what it was last year. Going into Week 1 is no different for us.”

While not many people outside of the Jets are predicting great things for this team, Bowles said he feels good about where his team is entering the season.

“I like our team right now,” he said. “Again, we haven’t played a game yet. We are still jelling. The chemistry is still coming together and the key in the first four or five weeks of the season is to win while you’re trying to jell. I like what we have and I like where we are going.”

The Jets have the challenge of facing a Week 1 opponent with a new head coach. The Lions hired

Matt Patricia this year to replace Jim Caldwell. The Jets know Patricia from his years as the Patriots defensive coordinator, but they are not sure quite what to expect Monday night.

“Well you look at tape from everybody,” Bowles said. “Obviously what they di d last year in Detroit , because they have like players, and then you look at some of New England. But Matt is a very smart guy. I’m sure he is going to tweak some t hi ngs and change some things up.”

Both WR Jermaine Kearse (abdomen) and S Marcus Maye (ankle) did not practice Tuesday. The Jets do not have to issue an injury report until Thursday, so Bowles did not say much about either player.

“We’ve just got guys resting and we’ll see how people are later in the week,” Bowles said about Maye, adding it is too early to worry about whether he can play Monday.

Bowles said he is not concerned about Kearse yet either.

The Jets tried out freeagent kicker Dan Bai ley on Monday, but did not sign him. Jason Myers remains the kicker for now.
