NHL: Matthews, Leafs edge Caps

GOLF: Langer in tie with late push

Bernhard Langer birdied three of the final four holes in Cary, N.C., for a 5-under 67 and a share of the SAS Championsh­ip lead with Gene Sauers. A day after nearly shooting his age with a 62 to match Sauers and Tom Lehman for the first-round lead, the 61-year-old Langer kept pace with Sauers at 15-under 129. In Walton Heath, England, Eddie Pepperell will take a three-shot lead into the final round of the British Masters after a 1-under 71 as he looked for his second European Tour title and a likely place in next year’s Masters. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Gary Woodland birdied the 18th hole for a 5-under 67 to move into a three-way tie for the lead with Marc Leishman and Shubhankar Sharma after three rounds of the CIMB Classic. In Incheon, South Korea, Danielle Kang and Charley Hull shot 4-under 68s to share the lead after three rounds of the KEB Hana Bank Championsh­ip.

ETC.: Crawford keeps WBO crown

Terence “Bud” Crawford stopped Jose Benavidez with 18 seconds left in the 12th and final round to retain his WBO welterweig­ht championsh­ip in Omaha, Neb.

Crawford had knocked Benavidez to the canvas with a powerful right hand with 46 seconds left, and then Crawford finished him off with consecutiv­e right hands.

After referee Celestino Ruiz stopped the fight, Crawford stuck out his tongue at his fallen opponent, who had made this a personal grudge match with insults he’s directed toward Crawford for months.

After 17 seasons in the NBA, veteran small forward Richard Jefferson announced his retirement in an Instagram post that paid tribute to his slain father, who was killed in a September drive-by shooting in Compton, Calif.

Jefferson, who was the 13th pick in the 2001 draft out of Arizona, played his first seven seasons with New Jersey and also had stints with the Spurs, Bucks, Jazz, Warriors, Mavericks, Cavaliers and Nuggets.
