BUZZ BOOK: This 4-year-old superhero wears her cape with pride
Raakhee Mirchandani knew she had a superhero on her hands in her daughter, Satya. Whenever Mirchandani walked down the streets of Hoboken with Satya, now 4, the little girl did so with flair: “Five out of seven days a week, she’s wearing capes, crowns, Wonder Woman ensembles. That’s her thing,” says Mirchandani, the editor-in-chief of the website Moneyish. “We love the bookstore, and we’re there all the time. But one day, I noticed that there were not many books about girls having great big adventures. And once I had that thought, it was hard to unthink it.”
So she wrote a book with an audience of one in her heart. Illustrated by Tim Palin, the book is called “Super Satya Saves the Day” and features a little girl who’s ready to conquer the tallest slide in Hoboken — if only her superhero cape wasn’t stuck at the dry cleaner. The book is a playful ode to conquering obsta- cles and having fun at the same time.
Of course, the fact that her book stars a little Indian-American girl is important, too.
“If kids can’t see it, they don’t know that they can be it,” says Mirchandani, a big advocate of the drive to include diversity in books. “When they see it in a book and see a kid that looks like them doing all these ordinary and exceptional things, they believe in their heart that they can do it. It’s not just little girls. There’s a character called Jahan and he wears a patka — the version of the Sikh turban that little boys wear.”
So what does Satya think of the book? “She’s feeling very spicy about it. I have to keep reminding her that momma wrote the book. She keeps saying, ‘It’s my book,’ ” says Mirchandani with a laugh.
“Super Satya Saves the Day” (Bharat Babies) is out now.
