Backup QB regrets ‘horrible decision’ that led to arrest

- By PAUL SCHWARTZ

There might be a time when the Giants look back on the arrest of Kyle Lauletta in his rookie year and consider it a blip on the radar screen, an isolated and nearly forgotten incident. For now, though, Lauletta is a rookie with a slim résumé with the Giants and this, more than anything else, is what he is known for.

“The incident that happened last week is a terrible representation of who I am and what I stand for,’’ Lauletta said Tuesday in his first comments since an Oct. 30 arrest following a traffic incident.

Lauletta will get the chance to show who he is. The Giants will not suspend him but coach Pat Shurmur said there are “internal consequences’’ Lauletta is facing. One of those is a hefty fine for missing a day of work.

“I’m just disappointed in how that went down,’’ Shurmur said.

Lauletta, 22, said he woke up late that fateful Tuesday morning, setting off what he called “sort of a chain reaction’’ that ended with incarceration. He allegedly made an illegal U-turn onto Route 495 in Weekhawken, N.J., and then ignored a po- lice officer’s directions, stepping on the gas and nearly hitting the officer. When a second officer pulled him over, Lauletta allegedly refused to produce his driver’s license or get out of the car. Among the charges he was hit with were eluding police, obstructing administrative law and resisting arrest, in addition to a slew of motor vehicle violations such as reckless driving and disregarding an officer’s directions.

“I made a horrible decision that I’ll regret for the rest of my life,’’ Lauletta said. “I can’t take it back though, there’s nothing I can do now so the only thing I can do is make good decisions moving forward, show up to work early and work my butt off and try to prove to everybody, not by what I say but what I do that hopefully this will be a thing of the past in a few weeks and we’ll just move forward as a team.’’

Lauletta apologized to the Giants organization, the coaching staff, his teammates, the fans and his family, especially his parents. He did not get into the specifics of the situation.

“By waking up late I put myself in an unfavorable position and now I have to deal with the consequences,’’ Lauletta said.
