Frequent flier miles add up for Brown

- By GREG JOYCE

It would be hard to blame Jamon Brown if his head were still spinning by the time he takes the field Monday night at Levi’s Stadium.

Brown was in Los Angeles last Tuesday when he was waived by the Rams. The next day, the Giants used their top waiver priority to claim him, and he jumped on a red-eye flight to New York that night. By Thursday, he was taking a physical, meeting his new coaches and getting his new playbook. With the Giants on a bye, he flew back to LA on Thursday night just to turn around and come back to his new home again Sunday.

Now, after four days of practice spent trying to put himself in position to earn the starting job at right guard, Brown will board a plane Sunday with the Giants for another cross-country flight to Cali- fornia for “Monday Night Football.”

“Jet lag started to hit me a little later in the week, probably [Friday] is when I really started to feel it,” Brown said Saturday. “But I gotta look at the bright side. I’m getting my frequent flyer miles up.”

Coach Pat Shurmur declined to name Brown as the starter yet, but said, “We’re getting him ready to go.”

The 6-foot-4, 340-pound Brown played all 16 games with the Rams last season, but lost his starting job after serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The pending free agent is happy to have another opportunity to prove himself.

While he has been taking a crash course on the details of the Giants system, Brown will get some help because of the opponent, having faced the 49ers six times with the Rams, including Oct. 21, a 39-10 LA win.

“What better situation?” Brown said. “For this to be my first week and my first game, playing against San Fran, meeting some guys that I’ve played multiple times through my career, it’ll be a good game to be able to feel this system and the nuances of it within the game. I’m excited.”

Shurmur said he has not gotten any information from the NFL about the air quality in Santa Clara or possible contingency plans because of the recent wildfires nearby.

“I haven’t heard anything officially from the league yet,” Shurmur said.
