A Press Corps Faceoff: Trump’s Tiff With Acosta
Judge Timothy Kelly ordering the White House to reinstate Jim Acosta’s press pass is another example of our lower courts having lost their senses (“Temporary pass,” Nov. 17).
There is no constitutional right to disrupt a presidential press conference by refusing to stop talking when asked to repeatedly, and particularly by the president.
Unless this ludicrous decision is appealed, it will open the floodgates for chaos. What next: Will throwing eggs, tomatoes and (as in the case of George W. Bush) shoes at the president be acceptable? Constantinos Scaros Newmanstown, Pa.
Acosta doesn’t ask questions; he accosts Sarah Sanders and the president during White House press conferences.
His serial interruptions, grandstanding and monopolizing serve to make him and his far-left views the focus of the conversation.
Whether or not the First Amendment protects Acosta’s press pass, he is a disgrace to the profession of journalism. S. Silver Manhattan
Is there any question that Trump is still chipping away at our First Amendment? Or that he cannot handle tough questions?
He takes offense at any question he doesn’t like, and vindictively goes after the reporter or news agency, always resorting to his grand cliché “fake news,” which is now used by his followers.
I’m not a fan of CNN, but Acosta was not in any way grandstanding. He was asking valid questions.
For the White House to start implementing rules under the guise of maintaining “decorum” is a farce. It’s another way of controlling the press. Michael Costagliola Monroe Township, NJ
Thanks to Michael Goodwin for being the voice of common sense regarding the recent disagreement between Trump and Acosta (“There’s no pass for bad conduct,” Nov. 18).
I appreciate Goodwin’s thoughts on the current crop of attention-seeking press-corps members. They would never have been allowed to disrespect former presidents.
Many of us elderly Americans think the children in the media and their sassy mouths belong on the playground, where teachers can put them in time out.
Grow up, White House press corps. It’s past time for a return to objective, informative reporting. If you can’t do that, take your marbles and go home. Vicki Dehner Littleton, Colo.
The judge’s decision is more than wrong. CNN has other reporters it could send to the White House. I hope Trump fights this: He’ll win. Barbara Paolucci Manhattan
I salute the president for calling out Acosta and revoking his press pass. There are several others in the group who need an attitude adjustment, too. Marie Wilkinson Charlotte
