Good Sam pays for tot’s meds

- Julia Marsh

It’s a Christmas miracle. A prominent New Yorker has anonymously paid $20,000 for a month’s supply of a life-changing medication for a 3-year-old Brooklyn girl with cystic fibrosis, after the drugmaker refused to waive the staggering cost so the child could receive it and stay home for the holidays.

The donor, who asked to be referred to as “Santa’s Helper,” came forward after reading about Cleo Kennedy (above) on The Post’s Web site Tuesday.

He and his girlfriend had been “talking about just how fortunate we are, how good our lives are, and I said, ‘What should we do? We have to do something,’ ” he recalled.

Cleo’s mom, Laura Ball said she and dad, Justin Kennedy, are “so grateful” Cleo won’t be facing the holidays in the hospital hooked up to a feeding tube because Kennedy’s insurance doesn’t cover the $272,000-a-year drug, Orkambi, and Ball’s wouldn’t begin covering Cleo until Jan. 1.

Cystic fibrosis, which attacks the lungs and prevents the body from absorbing nutrients, is a progressive disease that has caused Cleo’s weight to plummet to just 29 pounds. Orkambi would allow her body to absorb enough calories to keep her out of the hospital.

Orkambi’s maker, Vertex, which had denied a request last week for “bridge” supplies of its drug to Cleo, reversed course late Wednesday.

But the anonymous donor had already paid for a supply. Nearly a dozen other readers, including a local doctor who lost his daughter 13 years ago, also volunteered to provide funds to the family.
