Virginia’s ‘Racist’ Governor Crosses Another Line

-

Every time Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam opens his mouth, he makes a fool of himself (“Wreck-It Ralph,” Feb. 11).

Now Northam claims he’s in a position to bring Virginia to the next level. But he already has: the next low level. Nicholas Maffei Bronxville

During an interview with CBS anchor Gayle King, Northam called slaves “indentured servants” and was corrected. What could he have been thinking?

First, he admitted being in a picture where one man is in blackface and another is dressed in Ku Klux Klan robes. Now, he says slaves were indentured servants. Both are appalling and racist. Slavery is an abomination. Northam should resign for the good of Virginia and the nation. Racism has no place in the America I know and love. Frederick R. Bedell Jr. Glen Oaks Village

It’s hard to top the recent words and actions of Gov. Northam for stupidity and bone-headedness, his latest being calling slaves “indentured servants.”

His interview with King makes it clear that he’s not the person to lead the Commonwealth of Virginia to racial healing. His bumbling efforts to appear to be a leader will go down in history. Oren Spiegler South Strabane Township, Pa.

Maybe Northam should join the lineup of Democrats running for president. At least he won’t have any problem with name recognition. Michael Quane South Hempstead

Northam should resign immediately, especially considering the long history of lynchings, racism, classism and sexism in my mother’s home state of Virginia.

Northam’s yearbook page with people in blackface and a white-hooded Ku Klux Klan robe reveals him as a play-the-game politician and not a public servant who truly understands or fully embraces the diverse multicultural, multi-ethnic and multiracial makeup of America. Arthur L. Mackey Jr. Roosevelt

When Christine Blasey Ford made unsubstantiated accusations against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, many Democrats in the House and Senate said her allegations were credible.

Now that similar charges are being brought against Democrat Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, by a woman who said that he sexually assaulted her in 2004, Democrats are saying we need to wait and see the evidence (“Fairfax: FBI will clear me of sex crimes,” Feb. 11). Charles Michael Sitero Ormond Beach, Fla.

What we’re seeing in Virginia today is a mi- crocosm of what the Democratic Party has become — a party of racists, sexists and antiSemites. It’s a party that, since the last century, has had to keep rebranding itself in order to distance itself from its failed policies and ideas. Chris Tripoulas Manhattan

Kudos to Kevin Williamson for a well-articulated analysis of the Democratic Party’s dilemma over Virginia’s political mess, including the party’s decades-long tolerance of unapologetic anti-Semitism among Democratic leaders (“Party Crashers,” PostScript, Feb. 10).

Having looked the other way on the foibles of their own for so long, then played a scorched-earth game against Republicans in the Brett Kavanaugh matter, Democrats now find themselves on shaky moral ground. S. Silver Manhattan

This is obviously not the finest moment in Virginia’s political history. It is plain bizarre, weird and embarrassing. What will happen next is up in the air. Kenneth Zimmerman Huntington Beach, Calif.
